Who determines which syndicated and other columnists appear daily in the StarNews?

Robyn Tomlin

The StarNews subscribes to a variety of news services that provide syndicated columns, comics and other features for the paper and the website. We also purchase individual syndicated items when we have a need that isn’t fulfilled by the news service packages.

In general, the section editors select the columns that appear in their sections. Syndicated columns that appear on the editorial and op-ed pages, for instance, are selected by Editorial Page Editor Tricia Vance. Items that appear in features or sports are chosen by the features and sports editors.

For our features sections, we use reader feedback, research and other information about interests in the community to choose the content that we think will have the most value for our readers. We occasionally run polls or ask for reader feedback before we make a change in a regular feature like a comic strip or a puzzle.

This is one of the big problems with the Star News. They use the same columnists over and over again, year after year. It has gotten to the point all one has to read is the title of the artical to know what they are going to say. It would be more interesting if the Star News used other columnists with a fresh point of view.
