What is the name of the company that constructed the Ogden Interceptor?

Gareth McGrath

Carey Ricks, spokeswoman with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority, said the Ogden Interceptor was built by T.A. Loving in the late 1990s under a contract from New Hanover County.

Wilmington and New Hanover County used to operate their own water and sewer systems before merging their operations to form the authority in July 2008.

The line was built to serve the fast-growing Ogden and Murrayville neighborhoods of the county.

Recently the line has suffered from a series of cave-ins and associated wastewater spills due to bypass pumps clogging.

All of the problems have occurred along a 9,000-foot section of the 36-inch line consisting of fiberglass and concrete piping that parallels Smith Creek from the pump station on North Kerr Avenue to Interstate 40.

It’s believed to be the only place in the authority’s system that uses this specific type of pipe.

The authority has earmarked $7 million in emergency funds to replace the line, and that project is expected to wrap up this fall.
