How did Rocky Point get its name?

Jim Ware

You know you’re in Rocky Point when you see Paul’s Place Famous Hotdogs, 11725 U.S. 117, a favorite stopping point for locals and travelers. The community benefits from its proximity to New Hanover County. Its name reportedly comes from a rocky bend in the Cape Fear River, according to the StarNews resource guide to life in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties, Living Here.

Rocky Point sits about equal-distance between the Cape Fear River and the Northeast Cape Fear River and actually is not close to either.

Paul’s Place is rural, not in Rocky Point – the community of Rocky Point sits a bit farther North – but shares a Rocky Point address.

So, any rocky area in the Cape Fear River is most likely not the source of the name.

Since Mary Ann does raise a valid query, could you search further for another answer. I have heard that there are large boulders in the area, thus naming it rocky point?
