Does the proposed contract between R3 and New Hanover County allow R3 to import garbage?

Chris Mazzolini

The short answer is: No, but there’s a catch.

According to the terms currently being negotiated, R3 Environmental can’t bring trash in from outside New Hanover County, said Assistant County Manager Chris Coudriet.

But the county has guaranteed that it would produce at least 150,000 tons of trash per year. If the county doesn’t reach that amount, the county reserves the right to bring outside trash in, Coudriet said.

As it stands right now, the county landfill does not accept any trash from outside the county, but the trash incinerator, WASTEC, does.
