What is being done to provide more safety for New Hanover County Meals on Wheels drivers/volunteers?

That issue is currently being explored, said New Hanover County Senior Resources Director Jim McDaniel.

Wilmington police reported on June 18, 2010, that a Meals on Wheels driver was robbed at gunpoint while making a delivery on 14th Street. County officials met afterward with Sheriff Edward McMahon.

“We’re currently developing a detailed action plan, needs assessment and time line on how to proceed with ensuring the safety of the Home Delivered Meals drivers and volunteers,” McDaniel said.

“I’ve asked my program managers to make the immediate and necessary changes based on our safety review held with Sheriff McMahon and complete all recommendations from this meeting.”

Safety training sessions are scheduled and delivery routes “are under review for effectiveness,” McDaniel said.

“We hope to have all the changes in place shortly,” he said.

Wilmington police “do not provide any additional service to Meals on Wheels volunteers that we don’t also provide to all citizens,” Officer Crystal Williamson said.

Williamson offered the following safety tips for all citizens:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Never stop if uncomfortable with surroundings or if there is a suspicious person in the area.
  • Call police if any suspicious activity is observed.
