What has happened to the River Road relocation project? Thousands of beautiful trees were cut down, but then all work came to a complete stop over a year ago.

The project has been delayed by the economic downturn and the slow housing market.

Construction of the new portion of River Road will likely commence by the end of 2011 or early 2012, said Doug South, who is the project manager for Newland Communities’ RiverLights development.

That timeline is still flexible depending on the housing market.

“Ultimately, it’s about supply and demand, and right now the supply of houses in Wilmington is pretty high and demand is pretty low,” South said.
