Why does Landfall require residents to use a private trash hauler? Why can’t the City of Wilmington provide the service?

City trash workers would make rounds in Landfall off Eastwood Road, but the community’s council of associations has chosen to hire a private service.

When neighborhood associations or the bulk of residents on a private street hire a private vendors, it’s not cost-effective for the city to pick up from just a couple of homes, said city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert.

In recent years, the board of directors of Landfall’s council of associations has polled residents on the type of trash service they want, said Steve Hughes, Landfall’s director of maintenance operations.

About 75 percent of residents said they want pickups twice a week and at their back door. For a fee, the city  picks up trash and recycling at the curb, once a week, according to its Web site.

Landfall’s agreement with A-1 Sanitation allows for back-door trash pickup twice a week, or trash one day and recycling another, Hughes said.

For more information about services in Landfall, residents may contact its council of associations at coa@landfall.org.
