Why are some fire trucks painted red and others white or yellow in New Hanover County and Wilmington?

The Wilmington Fire Department uses red fire trucks, but some other departments choose yellow and white.

Fire trucks are painted according to the department’s preference, and the ones that serve this area have different opinions.

Most Wilmington Fire Department engines are red, while most New Hanover County fire trucks are white with yellow trim. Castle Hayne trucks are yellow.

“There’s no standard,” said New Hanover deputy chief Matt Davis. “It’s just an individual department’s preference.”

It’s tradition for fire trucks to be red, and some departments want to stick with that, Davis said. But some studies have shown that white or yellow trucks can be more visible, and other departments have heeded those.
