Where is the best place for “plane spotting” at ILM? Is there a park or road where locals watch landings and takeoffs?

Ken Little

The “official” area where airplane aficionados can get close to the runway is an observation park near the control tower on the east side of the airport.

The park, which is accessed off North Kerr Avenue, provides good sight lines for both the airport’s runways. It also provides unobstructed views of the main terminal and other facilities along the tarmac.

Airport operations manager Gary Broughton said the observation area, which includes picnic tables, is open daily during daylight hours.

Near the main terminal, viewing access is limited due to buildings and a lack of public parking near the perimeter fence.

But visitors have been known to walk up and watch the airport activity from the fence, which includes the possibility of getting relatively close to visiting aircraft.

Large windows inside the terminal and passenger holding area, where the loading gates are, also provides good views of the airfield.

The only place I have seen is in the baggage pick-up area or the gift shop, and the snack bar. General public cannot get in the passenger holding area with out a airline ticket.

I circled the entire North Kerr Avenue and couldn’t find it. It would be great if someone could offer more specific directions. Thanks!

You turn off N. Kerr onto ‘Control Tower Drive’. I would like to see ILM broadcast the transmissions between the control tower and the planes on an FM frequency so you could hear what’s going on while the planes are on approach or taking off. Many airports offer that in their viewing lots and it’s really cool to hear what’s going on between the pilots and the tower while watching the planes.

You can turn at the enterance to the North Carolina National Guard Road at North Kerr Ave. turn right and continue on air port control tower road towards the tower, the observation area will be on the right before you get to the tower.

Ive found a few amazing viewing areas around the airport that are unknown of to anyone else that I can tell. Ive got some good photos of them up online. Ive found these place by just exploring the area. Most are secluded fields or dirt roads. Its pretty sweet. I try to go about once a week or so.
