What percentage of items in recycling bins actually gets recycled?

Gareth McGrath

Scott Mouw, the state’s recycling director, said that generally 90-95 percent of the materials that are picked up curbside or dropped off at a service center are recycled.

The items that are lost are either too contaminated by food waste or in other ways to be recycled or are simply missed by the machines at the specialized material-recycling facilities(MRF) that separate and sort the materials.

Because of the strong and growing markets both domestically and internationally for most recyclable products, Mouw said there is a big push to reuse as much of the material as possible.

He said that about 40 percent of a household’s waste stream is potentially recyclable, although the actual amount that gets recycled varies from community to community.
