Will there be more flowers planted at the fragrance garden at Greenfield Lake? The planters used to be filled with flowers and now there is nothing. Is this part of the budget cuts?

“Yes, it is a part of the budget cuts. They cut a lot of the money in last year’s budget to help out with the shortfall,” says city Parks Superintendent Nina Johnston.

The Wilmington City Council trimmed about $13,000 from the Parks Division landscaping budget for 2009-2010, which resulted in empty planters this spring.

“It’s not just the fragrance garden, but most city facilities city-wide,” Johnston says. “We’re not putting any seasonal color in.”

The garden is a popular location for weddings. Some wedding parties may be seeing red, but not of the flowering variety.

“It’s going to be neat but bleak. There were a few hibiscus and perennial plants we saved last year and put in our city greenhouse over the winter and kept alive,” Johnston says. “What’s out there is what’s going to be planted.”

“We’re having a tough time (because) the budget is in a bad way. We’ve all got to do our part to help with the shortfall,” she says.

Azaleas abound along Greenfield Lake property “and it’s lush with natural stuff, but we don’t have the extra color,” Johnston says.

The garden could remain fallow over the next few budget years, Johnston says.

The city charges $35 for use of the fragrance garden for weddings.
