When did the New Hanover County schools end the junior high school system?

The last year the New Hanover County schools ran junior high schools was the 1987-88 school year,  said Rick Holliday, assistant superintendent of support services.

“At the end of that year, we closed two junior highs (Sunset Park and Lake Forest). Sunset Park Junior High (not to be confused with Sunset Park Elementary School) was eventually torn down. The Lake Forest Junior High building is currently housing the Mary S. Mosley Performance Learning Center.”

The schools now use middle schools, which include grades six through eight.
