There isn’t a school zone sign for Town Creek Elementary School on U.S. 17 because the school is not located on the highway, said Steve Miley, Brunswick schools’ head of operations.
The school is off U.S. 17 on Lake Park Drive, a side road whose only traffic right now is to and from the school, Miley said. Because the road is a cul-de-sac with light traffic, the district didn’t see the need to put a school zone sign on the highway at this time, although it may add one later, he said.
Town Creek Elementary is inside Rice Creek Plantation, a planned development that could have up to 2,800 homes, according to its developer. Of those, 1,800 would be single-family homes and 1,000 town houses.
The school system asked the N.C. Department of Transportation to put a traffic light at the U.S. 17 entrance to the development, Miley said. The DOT has required the developer to pay for the traffic light, which follows the “superstreet” model restricting left turns, he said.
