Spearfishing is just like any other fishing. Where you go will depend on what you want to catch.
You can go just about anywhere it’s safe to dive. And that’s a lot of places. I’ll try to give you a couple of popular spots.
For reef fish, such as trigger fish and grunts, locals like going out to ledges and also to wrecks such as the Hyde and Markham (about 18 miles off Masonboro), or around Frying Pan Tower. These areas are also popular with sharks and spearfishing puts a lot of blood in the water. So make sure you know your safety procedures and get your catch out of the ocean as soon as possible.
You can also catch flounder, sheepshead and other inshore species with a pole gun or sling. For those, popular sites include the jetty at Wrightsville Beach and areas of Banks Channel. Waterways are high traffic areas, though, so be sure to put your flag and buoy out and be careful of propellers.
Spear fishing is a popular diversion in the Cape Fear area and several tournaments are held each year off local beaches. The 2010 Wrightsville Beach Spearfishing Tournament will be held June 11- 13 out of Seapath Marina.
As with any type of fishing, though, be sure to educate yourself about rules and regulations. Fishing regulations have changed a lot this year, especially for the snapper/grouper family of fish. Go here for details: www.safmc.net
