After some checking with the N.C. Division of of Motor Vehicles, N.C. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Garifo found out the Old Baldy plate is apparently in legislative limbo.
“At this time, there has been no legislation passed enabling the Old Baldy specialty plate,” she says.
Senate Bill 51 was introduced in the last legislative session to allow establishment of the license plate. The bill was filed on Feb. 3, 2009, and referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
“That is the extent of the action that the bill saw,” Garifo says.
If the measure is adopted during the General Assembly session beginning May 12, the tag would cost $30, with $20 of each sale going to the Old Baldy Foundation.
The sponsor of the bill is Sen. R.C. Soles Jr.

Actually, the request for an Old Baldy specialty plate was combined with other specialty plates. It is now part of Senate Bill 116 which is sponsored by Senator David Hoyle of Gaston County. It left the Transportation Committee on July 23, 2009 and remains in the Finance Committee. It is hoped that the BIll will make it through the short session this summer.
The Old Baldy License Plate is now a reality.
House Bill 289 / S.L. 2011-392 was signed by the Governor On June 30, 2011. The Old Baldy Foundation, Inc,. must receive 300 applications before the plate will be produced. The revenue derived from the special plate shall be transferred quarterly to the Old Baldy Foundation, Inc., for its programs in support of the Bald Head Island Lighthouse.
