Amanda Glynn, division bridge program manager for the N.C. Department of Transportation, says the reader is likely referring to the transition area between the roadway section and the bridge deck, called the bridge approach.
“While we try to make this transition as smooth as possible, it is often difficult to match the exact grade of the two different sections,” Glynn says.
As a general rule of thumb, she says, the difference in grades should not exceed 0.5 percent.
“It’s amazing how a very small difference in grade can affect how a large truck crosses a joint. From time to time, DOT does resurface this area to smooth out any settlement,” Glynn says.
Glynn is not aware of any immediate plans to resurface the causeway.
There is a future widening project for that area between the Cape Fear Memorial and the Leland exit that will add one lane in each direction. It’s currently programmed for fiscal year 2013/2014.
