StarNews

Shirley Gilbert, a beloved newscaster who appeared on Wilmington television stations WWAY-TV3 and WECT-TV6, died Feb. 21, 1999 at the age of 52.

Born Shirley Cook on Nov. 19. 1946,  in Guilford County, N.C., Gilbert moved to the Wilminton area in 1975 and earned a degree in creaative arts from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

In a 1986 interview, she said she first approached WWAY about a job as a commercial artist but ended up being hired as a reporter and weathercaster, a job she held from 1976 to 1988. Some of her reports on Hurricane Diana were carried nationally by ABC News.

In 1988, Gilbert switched to WECT, where she was producer and co-anchor for the “Carolina in the Morning” series until her retirement in 1996. Gilbert also co-anchored TV6’s noon newscast.
