If a tornado were to hit our area, would we hear tornado warnings in New Hanover County?

Ken Little

There is no outdoor siren warning system for tornadoes or other weather events, says Warren Lee, director of the New Hanover County Department of Emergency Management.

“There are sirens on Pleasure Island within the 10-mile emergency planning zone for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant and outdoor sirens on the UNCW campus that are used for lockdowns, but no other sirens county-wide,” Lee says.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center includes up-to-date online warnings at www.spc.noaa.gov/products/wwa/

Radios that sound alerts when severe weather is approaching are also available at many local retail outlets.
