Did Wilmington respond to Google’s request for a project to provide high-speed broadband service?

The city of Wilmington and New Hanover County submitted a joint application to be a trial location for a new Google project called Google Fiber for Communities, city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert says.

City Council passed a resolution expressing support for the project on March 23.

Google Fiber is a project to create an ultra high-speed fiber network for residences in communities, Talbert says.

“Google has said that their fiber optic network speed would be 10 to 100 times faster than what is currently available and it would be competitively priced,” Talbert says.

Google will announce areas selected for the trial later this year.

“This will continue the Wilmington area’s trend of testing innovative technology. Previous examples are the digital switch, for which Wilmington was the first major city to switch from analog to digital-only broadcasting, as well as the more recent white-space initiative, which is testing using the old TV spectrum for wireless Internet connectivity,” Talbert says.

The Google application has two components. The first is the joint city/county application. The second is community-submitted support, Talbert says.
