What happened to Janice Harper at WGNI?

John Staton

In an e-mail, former midday DJ Janice Harper wrote that she left adult contemporary Wilmington radio station WGNI 102.7 FM at the end of January to be a full-time mom.

“I have a just-turned-5-year-old daughter that is going to kindergarten this year, and I made the decision to resign so that I could spend this time with her,”  Harper wrote.  “However, when she goes to kindergarten, I plan to explore other opportunities related to the field! I have to keep busy or I will go nuts! ”

Harper’s association with GNI spans more than 20 years. “I loved my midday position at GNI,” she said. “It was by far the best job I have ever had.”

Harper said that “it wasn’t an easy decision for me to leave GNI.” But because of what she termed “cutbacks throughout the industry,” the station “could not offer the compensation that I needed.”

“As we all know, the radio business has taken a major hit over the years,” Harper said. “I have been in radio for quite some time, and I hate to see this.”

She had warm words for her colleagues, in particular WGNI program director Mike Farrow. (“We miss her a lot,” Farrow said.)

“I consider him a friend and totally respect him as a PD and as a leader. Best boss on Earth,” Harper said. “I wish (WGNI) continued success and all the best.”
