No laws prohibit carrying a dog in the open bed of a pickup truck, but that doesn’t mean it’s a safe idea for dogs, according to many animal supporters.
Some would like to see regulations on carrying dogs in open truck beds because a dog could be seriously injured or kill in the event of an accident.
“We are advocates of that because it is very dangerous for the animals,” said Jean McNeil, Animal Control Services Manager for New Hanover County. “There have been some very serious accidents that we’ve had to respond to.”
Over the years, efforts to pass laws against carrying dogs in open truck beds have been unsuccessful. If you want to support such efforts, you can contact your government representatives or an animal charity.
