Is it legal to carry a dog in the open bed of a pickup truck?

There are no laws that prohibit carrying a dog in the open bed of a pickup truck, but that doesn’t mean it’s a safe idea for dogs, according to many animal supporters.

Some would like to see regulations on carrying dogs in open truck beds because a dog could be seriously injured or kill in the event of an accident.

“We are advocates of that because it is very dangerous for the animals,” said Jean McNeil, Animal Control Services Manager for New Hanover County. “There have been some very serious accidents that we’ve had to respond to.”

Over the years, there have been efforts to pass laws against carrying dogs in open truck beds, but none have succeeded.

The Humane Society of the United States offers this advice on traveling with dogs:
