Is an ALDI food store planned for Wilmington?

Judy Royal
StarNews

UPDATE: In March 2012, the StarNews reported on rumors that Aldi was scouting locations in Wilmington, but as of September 2013, no announcements had been made. Aldi’s is owned by the parent company of Trader Joe’s, which did open a store here on Nov. 30, 2012.

EARLIER ANSWER: Wilmingtonians love their food news, whether it’s a new grocery store or restaurant.

ALDI, a German-based discount grocer with U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Ill., nationally operates more than 1,000 stores in 29 states. It sells more than 1,400 of the most frequently purchased grocery and household items in manageable, non-bulk packaging, mostly under its own brands.

“At this time, ALDI does not plan to open a store in the Wilmington, N.C., area until 2012-2013,” Katherine Davis of MWW Group, which handles public relations for ALDI, wrote in an e-mail. “However, ALDI is always interested in exploring new real estate possibilities and markets.”

Heather Tarczan of MWW Group added: “At this point we are focusing primarily on the Georgia area, though we are always looking for new sites and communities in which ALDI can be a part of. Wilmington is more of a 2012 – 2013 goal for us, though at this time we don’t have any specific locations to announce.

“ALDI currently serves more than 20 million customers each month,” she said. “In 2009, we opened 80 new stores and plan to do the same this year, including a new division in Texas. When choosing a location we look at population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns.”

A year has passed since the question was posted, could you update us whether we will be getting an Aldi in Wilmington next year? Are they putting in a Fresh Market on Oleander at the closed Lowes Food store? Not that it matters as I can’t afford to shop there on 9 dollars an hour pay. We really do need an Aldi store, my brother lives in Canada and he shops at the one in Buffalo NY, he can take advantage of the great prices and we can’t and we live in the USA!?!? He will come down for Thanksgiving and will bring a carload of food for us from there and the prices would make your eyes pop! 2 dollars gal of milk, 1 dollar doz eggs, 1 dollar bread, etc. Is there any way we can start an email drive to get them here!

There has been no announcement about an ALDI food store coming to Wilmington.

Whole Foods is opening a store in the former Lowes Foods store on Oleander. Here’s a link to more information:
