Are there any family-friendly kayaking outfits in the area?

Cape Fear Paddlers Association is the most prevalent kayaking club in this area. It was established in 2001 but has, for the most part, stopped holding official meetings. The procedure now is to join its Yahoo! Groups membership and either tag along with someone who suggests a trip, or suggest a trip of your own and invite others. A link to their Yahoo! Group site is located on the home page of their club Web site, www.CapeFearPaddlers.org.

Its mission is listed as: “The Cape Fear Paddlers Association was formed to promote kayaking and canoeing in the waters within the Cape Fear Region, predominantly around Wilmington, N.C. The intent is to help our members and guests enjoy, protect, and improve these areas through our involvement. We frequently embark on group paddles and all levels of canoeists, recreational and sea kayakers are encouraged to participate. Our trips range from the black water creeks and streams inland to the mudflats, salt marshes and surf zones around the area beaches.”

Trips are a little slow right now, but when the weather heats up so will the kayaking.

Another club is Friends of Sampson County Waterways. They are not locally based, their meetings are held in Clinton, but the club sometimes hosts paddles in this area. To contact them you also need to go through Yahoo! Groups at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sampsoncountywaterways/

I belong to the mailing lists of both of these groups and can vouch for their family friendliness.

According to Robert Smith at Great Outdoor Provision Company, a-Raleigh club called Carolina Kayak Club, is a highly motivated group of people who plan trips all over North Carolina. You can check them out at

A great place to call would be hook line and paddle on eastwood road. The owner is very nice and always willing to help. I’m sure he would have some information

Yes! Watersmythkayaking.com is a family friendly company offering lessons and tours for all ages. Owner Robert Smith is an extremely knowledgeable, certified instructor who is patient and VERY thorough in his instruction. His other guides are all very accomplished certified paddlers and naturalists with extensive knowledge of marine and coastal biology. They have tour options for all kinds of local ecosystems. I fell in love with kayaking, and the Black River through Robert’s gentle instruction.
