Will there be a left turn signal at the light at Bayshore Drive?

Gareth McGrath

Benjamin Hughes, assistant division traffic engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation, said a developer is slated to do traffic improvements to the intersection in conjunction with his project, with the work taking place possibly as early as this spring.

Plans calls for new left-turn lanes to be added to Torchwood Boulevard and Bayshore Drive.

A left-turn arrow also will be added for Bayshore traffic turning onto south Market Street.

A turning arrow already exists for traffic turning from North Market onto Torchwood.

But Hughes said there are currently no plans to install left-turn arrows from South Market onto Bayshore or Torchwood onto North Market due to the low volumes of traffic that make those turns.

“With Market Street traffic so heavy, we wouldn’t want to take away from another movement if we didn’t have to,” he said.

Engineers will revisit the intersection once the improvements are finished to see if any further modifications are required, Hughes added.
