Is there a place in Wilmington that offers low-cost dental care?

Vicky Eckenrode

Cape Fear Community College has a dental hygiene clinic that offers cleanings, x-rays and some other basic dental services at affordable rates and allows students to gain the practical experience they need to graduate.

The clinic runs year round, CFCC spokesman David Hardin said.

As of early 2010, these are the services and fees:

Cleaning, fluoride treatment, cavity detection x-rays (if needed) $15.00

Full mouth series of x-rays 15.00

Panoramic x-ray 15.00

Sealants, each 5.00

Hardin said people should be aware that it will take longer than it would in a traditional dentist office because the students are in training. For example, a cleaning can take two to three hours.

Also, a separate, half-hour screening appointment is required for any new patients to the clinic. The screening is free.

After the screening, patients are put on a waiting list and called according to the type of patient or service students need to see to meet their graduation requirements.

To make an appointment, call Sarah Stone at 362-7341.

There also are several free and reduced-price dental clinics operating in the area for people who qualify because of their income levels and/or lack of insurance coverage.
