In calendar year 2012, a total of 491 vessels called on the Port of Wilmington.

That number includes all vessels — bulk, breakbulk and container, said Laura G. Blair, senior director of external affairs for the N.C. State Ports Authority.

Figures previously provided to the StarNews indicate traffic is up significantly at the port in recent years.

In 2006, 429 ships visited the port. During 2009, the Port of Wilmington handled 362 ships.

Since 2009, the Port of Wilmington has averaged 482 total vessel calls per year, Blair said.

“Business at both the Port of Wilmington and the Port of Morehead City continues to be strong. At the Port of Wilmington, we have experienced an increase in agriculture products and other breakbulk materials. We are operating ahead of budget and look forward to a strong 2013,” she said.
