How far south do Leland police have jurisdiction on U.S. 17?

Ana Ribeiro

Leland’s law enforcement jurisdiction on U.S. 17 ends a couple of miles south of Lanvale Road. According to Leland police Chief Tim Jayne, the town police force’s jurisdiction stretches south to the Grayson Park neighborhood off of Maco Road.

Leland’s boundaries can be confusing because the town has done spot annexations and is not completely contiguous. That means you can be in Leland one moment, in Belville or in an unincorporated part of Brunswick County the next, and then back in Leland.

You also could see a Leland officer pulling someone over in areas outside of Leland because the law allows the policeĀ  extraterritorial jurisdiction, Jayne said. That means any time Leland police officers are traveling to and from Leland’s jurisdiction while on duty, they are allowed to enforce the law in areas they’re passing through outside of the town’s limits.

Jurisdiction to the north is roughly bordered by Old Mill Road. Annexations have also given police jurisdiction in neighborhoods off Enterprise Drive, Orchard Loop Road and Pine Cliff Drive, to name a few.

For any questions on Leland police’s jurisdiction, you can contact Leland police Chief Tim Jayne atĀ  (910) 371-1100 or at tjayne@townofleland.com.
