Some criminals have a lot of loot, and some people leave behind valuable things when they are arrested, move or for other reasons don’t claim their items.
So what happens to property police confiscate or find?
The Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover Sheriff’s Office auction off those items to the general public.
Locals hoping to find deals or search for items in the auction should take note of two Web sites.
The first is PropertyRoom.com, which Wilmington Police Department uses for an online auction. The national Web site service was founded in 1999 by former police officers to act as a service business for law enforcement agencies so police officers could be freed of the responsibility of tracking and storing auction inventory and coordinating, promoting and conducting live auctions.
Anyone wishing to participate in an auction for items confiscated or found by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office should watch the office’s Web site for information. Details about upcoming or pending auctions are posted on the first page of the sheriff’s office’s Web site, www.newhanoversheriff.com.
