Is the Lowe’s Home Improvement still being built at Waterford in Leland?

Judy Royal

In early 2008 plans called for Houston-based Weingarten Realty, which developed the phase of Waterford including Harris Teeter, to buy 6 additional acres in the community for a Lowe’s Home Improvement that was set to break ground the following April. But that never happened.

Despite the closing date being near, the group’s contract with Waterford expired in January, said Waterford developer Bert Exum. Lowe’s asked if he would renew it with no risk to them and he declined. But Exum is optimistic that the project will one day be reality.

“They have a lot of money spent on the site, so I expect and have been told when the market turns around they will be coming back to put it under contract,” he said. “That is if someone else already has not bought it from me.”
