Two Bank of America branches in the city were robbed within a week of each other in November 2009, and in the past five years there have been 37 bank robberies in Wilmington.
The Wilmington Police Department keeps statistics on all types of crimes, and the department’s statistician pulled five years’ of records on bank robberies in the city by the year and location.
Four bank robberies have occurred in 2009 as of Nov. 11. There were four bank robberies each in 2008 and 2007. And in 2006, there were 14 bank robberies in the city, three bank robberies in 2005 and eight in 2004, according to police records.
Of all of the bank robberies in the past five years, 61 percent of the cases have been closed or cleared, while 31 percent are inactive cases and the remaining are either open or under further investigation, according to an analysis of records provided by the police department.
Anyone interested in keeping up with crimes in the city can check out the police department’s Web site – p2c.wilmingtonnc.gov – for daily or weekly summaries of incidents.
