The signs are part of a system to route traffic away from Wilmington during a hurricane evacuation.
If a major hurricane were headed this way, the N.C. Department of Transportation has a plan in place to reverse traffic flow for two lanes of Interstate 40, turning it into a one-way route for traffic leaving the Wilmington area.
Joe Chance of the DOT office in Wilmington said the signs you noticed are there to let DOT crews know where to position automated signs and other equipment that would be used to direct traffic toward I-40.
