A study from the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at N.C. State University finds that the North Carolina State Ports directly and indirectly support more than 65,000 jobs, which contribute nearly $500 million annually in state and local tax revenues, said Laura Blair, N.C. Ports spokeswoman.
More than 40,000 of these jobs are directly related to the movement of goods through North Carolina’s ports, with nearly 25,000 jobs represented by support business services, Blair said.
“Specifically in Southeastern N.C., the ports contribute directly or indirectly to 8,200 jobs and contribute $72 million in state and local tax revenue,” Blair said.
More than 200 people are directly employed by the N.C. Ports, Blair said.
“That number does not include people who are employed by the various businesses and organizations associated with vessel and cargo logistics,” she said. “Therefore, while someone might ‘work at the port,’ he or she might not be employed by the ports.”
