Where can I find gelato in this area?

Judy Royal

For those of you who aren’t familiar with gelato, it’s Italy’s answer to ice cream, but there are a few differences, most notably that gelato typically has less calories and fat then ice cream without sacrificing taste and texture. Click here for other ways to discern the two.

So maybe you’re not in Rome, but if you want to go out for a nice scoop or cone of gelato (not just buy it in the grocery store and pig out on your couch) there are a few area establishments you can visit. The Island Ice Factory on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk has a dozen or more flavors of gelato, and I can tell you from personal experience that the mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone is quite tasty. Follow them on Twitter @TIIF.

Kornerstone Bistro, 8262 Market St., Wilmington [Map this], has several selections of gelato on its dessert menu, too.

If you know of any other places that serve gelato in this area, please share them below.

You can find gelato at Apple Annies, in the 900 block of South Kerr Ave.

Francesco’s Cafe on Kerr Avenue next to Apple Annie’s has gelato, which I believe they make themselves.

Rita’s, the new ice cream shop off S. College sells gelato. It is located in the new shopping area, right by the old gold’s gym and harris teeter. They also have a lot of deals, so their prices are really cheap. :)

Francesco’s Cafe beside Apple Annie’s has wonderful gelato – and sandwiches!

Make sure not to confuse a gelati with gelato. A gelati is typically one scoop of american style ice cream with one scoop of italian ice (which you can find at Rita’s). Gelato is the Italian style ice cream which is made with whole milk instead of butter, cream & eggs. It’s also lower in fat and has less air in it which makes it creamier and less filling (which you can find at The Island Ice Factory & Francesco’s). I’m glad to see our community educating themselves on these wonderful frozen treats!

COASTAL ROASTER at the shopping center at Sanders & Carolina Beach. Francesco’s closed and Coastal Roaster took over to make Gelato lovers happy. To top it off, it is also a wonderfully cozy cafe. And it has great hours. How about some gelato after dinner?

I had to post this, to share the joy of not having to wait for summer for my next gelato treat.
