For those of you who aren’t familiar with gelato, it’s Italy’s answer to ice cream, but there are a few differences, most notably that gelato typically has less calories and fat then ice cream without sacrificing taste and texture. Click here for other ways to discern the two.
So maybe you’re not in Rome, but if you want to go out for a nice scoop or cone of gelato (not just buy it in the grocery store and pig out on your couch) there are a few area establishments you can visit. The Island Ice Factory on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk has a dozen or more flavors of gelato, and I can tell you from personal experience that the mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone is quite tasty. If you know of any other places that serve gelato in this area, please share them below.
