Where can I dispose of (throw away) old unused firearm ammunition in the Wilmington area?

Wilmington police will gladly accept the old ammo, but only under certain conditions.

“People can turn it into the department and we will dispose of it,” says Sgt. Darryl Nester.

The ammunition needs to be in some type of “secure container” like the original manufacturer’s carton or a plastic container, Nester says.

The properly secured ammunition can be taken to the front desk of the Wilmington Police Department, 615 Bess St.

“It would be very helpful if they had knowledge concerning the age of the ammunition,” Nester says.

Dep. Charles Smith, spokesman for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, adds: “The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will gladly accept old ammunition and ensure that it’s disposed of properly.”

Sheriff’s office headquarters is located at 3950 Juvenile Center Road, in Castle Hayne.

You could also call any of the gunsmiths in the area. Most would be happy take it, as rounds for test firing after a repair are always needed and some of the older cartridge sizes are hard to get these days. Just because ammo is old doesn’t mean it’s not usable. It normally still works fine.
