What is the status with Lake Leamon since the sewage problems there?

David Ennis

Lake Leamon is currently closed while its owners work to correct the sewage violation, but work is coming along and officials said it could reopen by the end of the season.

The campground had been closed for sewage violations as well, said Duplin County Health Director Ila Davis. “We closed the campground until it’s corrected,” Davis said. “It involves a new system. They’ve been working on that.”

Duplin County Environmental Health Specialist Johnnie Summerlin has been working directly with the campsite owners and state officials. He added that some of the preliminary work for a new system, including some engineering work, had begun even before the violation that closed the campground.

Summerlin said the campground will likely reopen in stages. “There’ll be like three systems installed. Once one of the systems is installed, we can open a portion of the facility,” he said. “They’re finalizing the plans; nothing has been turned into me yet where we can issue a permit but I feel hopeful that can be done in the next couple weeks,” he added.
