Is there a local lake or beach that allows dogs to swim?

Wilmington isn’t the most pooch-friendly city in the world, and there’s not a lot of dog parks, let alone water holes for your pooch to play in (it’s actually unsafe in most spots, due to alligators, snakes and other critters). Below is the list of times of the year you can take your pet to the beach, but as you’d expect, there are many limitations.

Before we get into those, however, the City of Wilmington also offers a “Pooch Plunge” at the Legion Stadium Pool a couple of times a year. This year the Plunge will be held 4 – 8 p.m. Aug. 24 through Aug. 28 and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Aug. 29. The cost is $5 per dog per day. Proceeds benefit the Pender County Humane Society. Only dogs will be allowed in the pool at those times, no humans.

Annually, you can take your furry friend to one of the local beach for a splash in the ocean, but only when the beach communities allow it.

Wrightsville Beach: No pets are allowed on the beach strand from April 1 through September 30. Pets must be on a leash at all times.

Carolina Beach: All dogs are required to be on a leash at all times. Dogs are allowed on the beach from November 1st to February 28th. You must have on your person at all times, a plastic or paper container that can be used to clean up and contain dog waste until it can be disposed of in an appropriate container. This container must be produced and shown, upon request, to anyone authorized to enforce this ordinance.

Freeman Park Pet Regulations (North end of Carolina Beach): Dogs are required to be on a leash from April 1st to September 30. From October 1st to March 31, dogs are allowed off a leash so long as they remain under voice command and the owner is within a reasonable distance from the pet.

Kure Beach: You may walk your leashed dog on the Kure Beach strand from October 1st to March 31st. However, it is unlawful for any person to have or allow their dog to be upon the beach strand of Kure Beach during the period of April 1st through September 30th of each year.

Surf City: Allowed year ’round, but always on a leash

Topsail Beach: Dogs are allowed, but they must be on a leash from May 15th through September 30th. At other times the dog must be under voice command of a responsible person, but does not have to be on a leash. The person must always be prepared to remove any “deposits” left by the dog. These regulations apply to the entire town including the beach.

Holden Beach: Pets are not allowed on the beach from May 20 to September 10, except between 5 P.M. and 9 A.M. daily. Pets must be on a leash at all times on the island

Sunset Beach: It is unlawful for a pet to be on the beach strand between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. from the Friday immediately preceding Memorial Day through Labor Day, whether or not the pet is restrained and under the control of the owner or some other person. After 6 p.m. and before 8 a.m. from the Friday immediately proceeding Memorial Day through Labor Day, pets may be allowed on the strand if restrained and under the control of the owner or some other person assuming responsibility for the owner. After Labor Day and before the Friday immediately proceeding Memorial Day, pets may be allowed on the beach strand if restrained and under the control of the owner or some other person assuming responsibility for the owner.

Oak Island: Dogs are allowed at any time as long as they are on a leash of reasonable length. From 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 15 to May 15 they may be off the leash but under voice command.

Ocean Isle: No dogs are allowed on the beach from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.No dogs allowed at any at public access/parking areas. You must clean up after your dog.

Hey, there is a spot to take Fido right now!!!
At the public area at Fort Fisher (just south of the museum) dogs are allowed on the beach, leashed of course. The park even provides the waste bags! Getting ready to take our puppy down this morning for a refreshing romp! Enjoy!

    Nice compilation – thanks!

We also take the dog to the end of the Cape Fear, at the Snow’s Cut park……..it’s muddy and sometimes pretty fishy-smelling, but a lovely little stretch and you can sometimes find some privacy if you’re willing to walk down the strand a ways.

Carolina Beach’s Freeman Park is the most dog-friendly beach we’ve found. Dogs are welcome YEAR-ROUND in Freeman Park. Between now and the end of they can run free, so long as they are under voice command. At the height of the tourist season they must be leashed, but are always welcome. If you don’t have a 4-wheel drive, visit anyway. Park in the convenient public lot on Canal Drive.
