Are there some public RV sites within Wilmington for overnight camping?

Certainly not in city parks or other city-owned property, says city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert. The same goes for New Hanover County-operated parks.

Carolina Beach State Park is operated by the state and does have numerous sites that can accommodate recreational vehicles, N.C. Parks System spokesman Charlie Peek says.

There are 83 sites overall in the park, at 1010 State Park Road near Snow’s Cut, and most of them are designed to accommodate RV’s, Peek says.

The cost is $18 a night for up to six people. There are also about 10 privately owned sites in New Hanover County where RV’s can park for overnight camping.

While there are indeed camping sites at the Carolina Beach State Park that can accommodate small and large RVs, none of the sites have power, water or sewer hook ups for recreational vehicles. All the sites feature tent-pads and many have limited parking slots. There is a dump station on site for RVs to clean their holding tanks.

Large RVs requiring “shore power” and hook ups can stay at the KOA Kampground on Market Street. There are no other campgrounds in New Hanover County. “Boondocking” – parking overnight in a retail center’s parking lot – is allowed at area WalMarts.
