All that construction you see going on is the result of more than three years of hard work by Wrightsville Beach town officials to have a new public safety building that houses police and fire departments under one roof. Construction of the $6 million facility, scheduled for completion in 2010, kicked off after the May 29 groundbreaking.
Currently, the police department is in part of the Town Hall structure, and the fire department occupies a nearby set of buildings, all part of the old desalination plant complex. They moved there in 1984, although a separate dormitory was later added for firefighters after black mold inhabited their quarters.
