What is the N.C. Junior Sorosis?

Ben Steelman

Founded on Feb. 21, 1938, by daughters of members of the North Carolina Sorosis, the N.C. Junior Sorosis is a Wilmington-based community service organization for women ages 18-40. It is affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the N.C. Federation of Women’s Clubs.

The name “Sorosis” comes from the Greek word for a cluster of flowers.

The club’s objective is hands-on community service in the fields of education, preserving natural resources, helping children, the elderly and disabled, advocating for issues affecting women, children and families and supporting the arts.

Among other activities, the group supports scholarships at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the New Hanover County schools the Wilmington Children’s Museum, Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, the YAHWEH Center, Boys’ and Girls’ Homes of North Carolina, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher, the Child Development Center, New Hanover County public libraries and the Child Advocacy Commission. Its major fundraiser is an annual antique show and sale.
