Where are the gay bars in Wilmington?

John Staton

Downtown Wilmington has a thriving bar and club scene, but only two establishments could really be described as gay bars. While they couldn’t be more different, both attract a sizable non-gay clientele.

The biggest is Ibiza at 118 Market St., Wilmington [Map this], which bills itself as an “alternative dance club.” The two-story club has several nooks and crannies that include a laid-back upstairs bar, an outdoor patio, a pool room and a large dance floor that hosts weekly “drag shows.”

Straight female women have been heard to say that they prefer to go to Ibiza to dance because they don’t have to worry about getting hit on quite as much. For more info, go to http://www.ibizawilmington.com.

Costello’s, at 211 Princess St., Wilmington [Map this], is a small – tiny, even – piano bar that its owner has called a ‘hetero-friendly’ bar. It’s a mostly laid-back, lounge environment that features live music (mostly singers accompanied by piano) several nights per week.

Outside of downtown, The Tool Box, 2325 Burnett Blvd., Wilmington [Map this], bills itself as “a gay-owned and operated facility.” www.ToolBoxNC.com http:// www.ToolBoxNC.com
