How do I get information about criminals?

There are several ways to get information on an offender. If you are a victim, you may sign up for notices about offenders’ detention status and any upcoming court dates. You can sign up to get notified by phone or e-mail about the person by following this link to the Statewide Automated Victim Assistance and Notification: http://www.ncsavan.org/. This only tracks people who are actually booked in jails, not people who have bonded out and were never booked.

If you don’t want to get notified about an offender but want to check on his status periodically, you may do a search by visiting the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Web site that provides information on inmates at http://p2c.nhcgov.com/p2c/jailinmates.aspx. You must click on Inmate Inquiry to scroll by name, or you can sift through the entire jail roster. You may also call the New Hanover County jail at (910) 798-4200. For people incarcerated in Brunswick County, call (910) 253-2760 and in Pender County, call (910) 259-1353.

If a person has been convicted of a crime in North Carolina, you can search for him in prison through the N.C. Department of Correction Web site at http://webapps6.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view.
