The town of Belville incorporated in 1977 so it could have its own liquor store.
These days, the town of 1,400 has two liquor stores: one near the U.S. 74/76 exit on N.C. 133 and a newer one in the Waterford commercial center on U.S. 17. Liquor sales are the third largest revenue source for the town.
For a while, Town Hall was located inside the old liquor store in downtown Belville. The town’s headquarters had to move elsewhere a few years ago, once the building was condemned.
The current Town Hall, in a much newer building, is across from the Belville liquor store in Waterford.
Belville is trying to build an identity. It’s staying away from past ideas of joining the bigger town of Leland and making progress toward molding its old, dilapidated downtown into a quaint mixed-development district.
