Where is a place I can buy environmentally friendly building products?

Judy Royal

Just about everyone wants to take part in saving the earth these days, and as a result, more “green” businesses than ever are popping up. In early 2008, Wilmington saw the opening of its first store devoted exclusively to green building products. Sapona Green Building Center, 716 S. 17th St., Wilmington [Map this], offers products made from recycled, reclaimed, sustainable and nontoxic materials. Examples include countertops made from recycled paper or glass; flooring made from sustainable bamboo and cork or reclaimed wood; tiles made from recycled glass; natural fiber and recycled carpeting; nontoxic paint, plaster and adhesives; recycled cotton insulation; low-flow water fixtures; and solar water heating systems. Sapona also offers design, fabrication and installation services as well as free seminars to teach people about building in an environmentally conscious way. For more information, log on to www.saponagreen.com or call (910) 762-1505.

Don’t forget the Cape Fear Habitat ReStore, 1208 S. Third Street, Wilmington, 28401, 762-4793. They pick up (free of charge) construction materials, furnitre, appliances and most houshold items to resell to the public at a reasonable cost–keeping tons of items out of the landfill! Proceeds help to build affordable housing for loe-imcome families to purchase. http://www.capefearhabitat.org
