Whether you live in New Hanover, Brunswick or Pender, there are a number of resources that can help seniors live healthier and happier lives.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY

The New Hanover County Department of Aging Senior Center

The center offers many services to senior citizens and provides local information and referrals. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Job placement services connect seniors over 55 with employers in the county. Transportation for medical needs and for senior center meals is coordinated. Home-delivered meals are available. Dining room meals area at locations in Wilmington and Castle Hayne. Social, travel, literary and drama clubs, fitness activities and dance and arts classes are scheduled.

The center provides social activities for seniors ages 50 and older. Lunch at noon Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bingo at 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Painting on Mondays and Wednesdays. Bridge card games on Tuesdays and other classes and activities, such as dancing and games.

Elderhaus

Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Provides daytime supervision and an alternative to early or inappropriate long-term institutionalization for adults 18 and up. (Most are 60 and older.) Services include respite care, noon meal, snacks, entertainment, activities and a registered nurse to administer medication. Weekend respite care available, call for details.

The center began providing expanded medical service coordination in early 2007, contracting with outside specialists to organize care for clients.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY

Oak Island Senior Citizens Craft Shop, 5918 E. Oak Island Drive. Those 50 and older are invited to join this nonprofit center. Phone: 278-5224

PENDER COUNTY
